VETUS vs Side-Power (Sleipner) Thrusters
Choosing between VETUS and Side-Power (now Sleipner)? On a 12 V boat, VETUS's 12 V BOW PRO BOWA gives brushless proportional control from 30 to 76 kgf, rated 6 or 10 minutes at full power, against about 3 minutes for Sleipner's brushed SEP PRO. Sleipner's brushless 12 V E30 to E95 are newly announced, and for continuous full-power running its eVision range has the edge.

Where VETUS has the edge over Side-Power
12 V brushless proportional
The 12 V BOW PRO BOWA models are brushless and fully proportional (variable speed, not just on or off) on a plain 12 V system, from 30 kgf in a 110 mm tunnel to 76 kgf in 185 mm, and VETUS rates them for 6 or 10 minutes at full power by model. Sleipner's 12 V proportional tunnel thruster with full published specifications is its brushed SEP PRO (25 to 160 kg at 12 V), rated about 3 minutes maximum continuous. Its brushless 12 V E30 to E95 are listed as new in its August 2026 range sheet, and its preliminary eVision user manual rates the E-series for continuous running at 22°C ambient.
Built-in boost charger
On a 12 V boat, BOW PRO Boosted (57 to 150 kgf) runs from its own 24 V thruster bank of two batteries and keeps it charged from the boat's 12 V supply through a built-in, three-stage charger, which VETUS says switches on only when the source voltage is high enough, so it doesn't drain the start battery. As standard, the charger is only suitable for lead-acid batteries. For its 24 V SE thrusters, Sleipner's route is a separate voltage conversion switch box with an additional 12 V battery, charging all batteries from the 12 V system when the thruster is off.
Honda and Suzuki joysticks
VETUS publishes BOW PRO integration with Honda outboards on Ultraflex controls and with Suzuki DF300BMD and DF350AMD outboards with integrated steering. Sleipner's joystick chart lists Yamaha and Mercury outboard joysticks but no Honda or Suzuki system; Sleipner recommends checking with the joystick maker, and we confirm your engines and controls before we quote.
Three years for private owners
For a privately owned boat in strictly recreational use, VETUS gives 3 years on thrusters, against 2 years for leisure use in Sleipner's warranty statement. VETUS's 3 years doesn't cover a company-owned boat (Sleipner's terms are set by leisure or commercial use, with no private-owner condition), and VETUS voids a claim where required maintenance wasn't done by an authorised VETUS dealer, so plan the thruster's servicing with one.
Our verdict
On a 12 V boat, VETUS BOW PRO has two published edges over Sleipner's brushed SEP PRO: the 12 V BOW PRO BOWA is brushless and fully proportional (variable speed) from 30 to 76 kgf, and VETUS rates it for 6 or 10 minutes at full power against about 3 minutes for the SEP PRO. Above 76 kgf, BOW PRO Boosted goes to 150 kgf on a 12 V boat by charging its own 24 V bank from your 12 V system, with no separate switch box. Side-Power is the name Sleipner used in some markets until 2021, and it's a strong range: Sleipner is the better call for continuous full-power running from its eVision range, ignition protection on a proportional thruster, a retractable from a current catalogue range, a purpose-built external stern thruster, large hydraulic or AC thrust, or a Volvo Penta, ZF or Twin Disc joystick.
VETUS and Side-Power side by side
Published figures from each maker, labelled where they come from an Australian distributor or another company. Where a maker does not publish a figure, the table says so rather than guessing, and a tick marks whichever side has the published edge - including when that is Side-Power.
Electric thrust range
VETUS
BOW PRO: 30 to 420 kgf across 25 models, at 12, 24 or 48 V. Standard on/off DC: 25 to 285 kgf. RIMDRIVE: 160 kgf at 48 V
Side-Power
SE (on/off): 20 to 300 kg at 10.5/21 V (25 to 340 kg in its 12/24 V column), on 12 or 24 V, with the largest, SE300, at 48 V. SEP PRO proportional versions run SEP20 to SEP130 at 12 V (25 to 160 kg) and SEP50 to SEP120 at 24 V (62 to 139 kg); larger SEP models are discontinued in favour of eVision. eVision: 100 to 340 kg on 24/48 V or 48 V, plus E350 and E420 at 48 V; 12 V and 12/24 V E30 to E95 newly announced
Thrust-rating voltages differ by range. VETUS rates its standard and ignition-protected DC thrusters at a battery voltage of 10.5 or 21 V to allow for voltage drop, the same basis as Sleipner's lower SE figures. For BOW PRO, VETUS lists thrust at 12, 24 or 48 V. Sleipner rates SE thrust at 10.5/21 V, which it says most installations actually deliver, also lists 12/24 V figures, and says its E-series motors keep rated thrust across a wider voltage range. VETUS writes kgf (kilograms of force) and Sleipner writes kg; both are thrust ratings.
Motor and control
VETUS
BOW PRO: brushless induction motor with no carbon brushes, which VETUS calls maintenance-free; proportional as standard. RIMDRIVE: brushless permanent-magnet rim motor, proportional as standard. Standard and ignition-protected DC: brushed (series wound), on/off
Side-Power
eVision E and ER: brushless 6-phase permanent-magnet synchronous motor with integrated inverter, proportional as standard. SE and SR: brushed DC, on/off, or proportional as SEP PRO (SRP, SRLP and SRVP for retracts) or by adding a PPC power control unit and loom kit
Sleipner says most of its thrusters from the 2000s onward can be upgraded from on/off to proportional control.
Brushless proportional on 12 V
VETUS
12 V BOW PRO BOWA: 30 to 76 kgf in 110 to 185 mm tunnels, rated 6 or 10 minutes at full power by model. Above 76 kgf on a 12 V boat, BOW PRO Boosted (57 to 150 kgf) runs from its own 24 V bank, charged from the 12 V system
Side-Power
Brushless 12 V and 12/24 V E30 to E95 models are newly announced in the August 2026 range sheet, with weights listed as TBD. Sleipner's 12 V proportional tunnel line with full published specifications is the brushed SEP PRO: SEP20 to SEP130, 25 to 160 kg at 12 V (20 to 130 kg at 10.5 V) in 110 to 250 mm tunnels, rated about 3 minutes maximum continuous
Sleipner had published no product pages or full specifications for the E30 to E95 when we checked in September 2026. The tick is for a brushless 12 V proportional thruster with full published specifications today; Sleipner's brushed SEP PRO reaches higher thrust at 12 V than the 12 V BOWA's 76 kgf.
Full-power runtime
VETUS
BOW PRO: 6 or 10 minutes at full power depending on model, after which power may be reduced, and VETUS says longer at reduced power. RIMDRIVE RD160 (160 kgf, 48 V): VETUS's catalogue says run time is only limited by the supply bank. Standard on/off DC: 2 to 4 minutes continuous or combined in one hour, per VETUS's catalogue; VETUS's BPSR, BPJR, BPAS and BPAJ DC panels switch the thruster off after more than 2 minutes' continuous running, with a warning, and it can be restarted once the switch is released and the panel's light stops flashing, about 5 seconds later
Side-Power
eVision: continuous at 100% thrust at 22°C ambient, typically limited by battery capacity. SE and SEP PRO: about 3 minutes maximum continuous (S2, 2 to 3 minutes at 20°C)
The tick is for eVision's continuous rating at 100% thrust at 22°C ambient, published for its 24/48 V range and, in Sleipner's preliminary eVision manual, for the newly listed 12 V E30 to E95 as well. Among VETUS's electric thrusters, its catalogue gives a comparable rating only for the single 160 kgf RIMDRIVE. Against Sleipner's brushed SE and SEP PRO, BOW PRO's published full-power runtime is longer. S2 is a short-time duty rating: the longest run at full power before the motor must cool. Sleipner's product pages say its PRO thrusters derate power when hot rather than shutting off.
Ignition protection (ISO 8846)
VETUS
Offered on VETUS's on/off DC range: ignition-protected models from 25 to 160 kgf at 12 and 24 V, with an EU Declaration of Conformity citing ISO 8846 for the BOW55, BOW75 and BOW95 DI series. BOW PRO: not ignition protected
Side-Power
Standard on eVision E and ER, SX and EX; optional on SE as SE-IP and SEP-IP models. The E-series EU Declaration of Conformity cites EN ISO 8846:2017
VETUS says a thruster in a compartment with a petrol engine, tank or fuel line, or propane storage must be ignition protected, and lists outboard engines and their fuel tanks, and PWCs, among the spaces its ignition-protected thrusters are made for. Sleipner likewise says a thruster in a petrol engine space must be ignition protected. VETUS's own documents conflict on RIMDRIVE ignition protection, so we make no claim for it.
24 V thruster on a 12 V boat
VETUS
BOW PRO Boosted (BOWB) runs from its own 24 V thruster bank (two batteries on BOWB057 to BOWB150) with a built-in DC-to-DC boost charger: the boat's 12 V supply charges that bank (or 24 V charges 48 V) through a monitored third connection. As standard, the charger is only suitable for lead-acid batteries
Side-Power
A separate voltage conversion switch box lets 24 V SE thrusters run on a 12 V boat using an additional 12 V battery, and all batteries charge from the 12 V system when the thruster is off (10112A for the SE120, SE130, SE150 and SE170; 15112A for the SE210 and SE250). Sleipner also lists a 24 V to 48 V voltage conversion unit (20124A) for the 48 V SE300. Sleipner publishes no 12 V to 24 V charger
Both routes add batteries: BOW PRO Boosted runs its own 24 V bank (two batteries on BOWB057 to BOWB150), and Sleipner's switch box adds one 12 V battery. On a 12 V boat, BOW PRO Boosted runs to 150 kgf, while Sleipner's 12 V to 24 V switch boxes serve the SE120 to SE250 (139 to 300 kg in its 12/24 V column). The tick is for VETUS building the charger into the thruster, with no separate switching unit to fit.
Tunnel sizes
VETUS
110, 125, 140, 150, 185, 250, 300 and 400 mm internal diameter, in GRP, steel or aluminium (140 mm in GRP only, 400 mm in GRP or steel, aluminium up to 300 mm). VETUS says BOW PRO was made to share tunnel sizes with current VETUS thrusters and many other brands
Side-Power
SE: 110 to 300 mm. eVision: 125 to 300 mm in the August 2026 range sheet, to 386 mm in the commercial catalogue. Both include a 215 mm size. Retracts: 185 to 386 mm. AC and hydraulic: to 730 mm
VETUS doesn't name the other brands BOW PRO shares tunnel sizes with, so we confirm fit on every replacement.
Retractable thrusters
VETUS
Retractable BOW PRO (57 to 90 kgf, 12 and/or 24 V, boats of 25 to 50 ft or about 7.5 to 15 m): coming soon, with no release date published, and VETUS's 2026-2027 catalogue lists no other retractable
Side-Power
Available now: ER eVision (brushless, 100 to 300 kg, with ERL80 and ERL95 newly announced in the August 2026 range sheet) and SR (brushed DC on/off or proportional, 96 to 340 kg in its 12/24 V column or 80 to 300 kg at 10.5/21 V; AC or hydraulic to 650 kg), in vertical and low-profile versions
External stern thrusters
VETUS
Transom-mounted stern tunnels (STERN110P to STERN300P, and STERN250R for RIMDRIVE) let VETUS tunnel thrusters mount externally on the transom
Side-Power
Purpose-built external units: SX (12/24 V, 42 to 116 kg, on/off or proportional), eVision SXE100 (24 V, 100 kg, no tunnel needed, for twin-sterndrive boats up to 55 ft or about 17 m) and EX pods (24 V, on/off)
Rim-drive thruster
VETUS
RIMDRIVE RD160: gearless rim motor with the propeller as the rotor, 160 kgf, 48 V, 250 mm tunnel, proportional as standard
Side-Power
Sleipner publishes no rim-drive thruster in its August 2025 catalogue or August 2026 DC range sheet
RIMDRIVE needs a 48 V thruster supply.
Noise
VETUS
VETUS markets the RIMDRIVE as the world's quietest thruster, citing its virtually cavitation-free propeller and lack of gears, and credits its DC thrusters' low noise to a six-blade propeller, spiral gears and a flexible coupling. No dB figure is given on vetus.com or VETUS's product pages
Side-Power
No measured dB figures published. Sleipner says its Q-Prop 5-blade skew propeller cuts noise by 20 to 40% in real installations (up to 75% in controlled tests), and that the externally mounted SX cuts noise emission by about 80%
Both makers' noise claims are their own, with no measured sound level from either that we could compare.
Hydraulic and AC thrusters
VETUS
Seven hydraulic thrusters, 55 to 550 kgf, driven by the propulsion engine(s) or a generator
Side-Power
SH hydraulic, 80 to 2200 kg across the SH table, which Sleipner describes as continuous duty. SAC AC thrusters (230, 400 or 690 V), 240 to 2200 kg. DNV type-approved options for commercial vessels
Outboard joystick integration
VETUS
BOW PRO integrates with Yamaha Helm Master EX (Yamaha's upgraded controls; Yamaha says new boats only, fitted by the boat builder); Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO) on Verado, with Mercury's integration kit; Honda outboards with Ultraflex controls; and Suzuki DF300BMD and DF350AMD with integrated steering
Side-Power
Sleipner's chart lists Yamaha Helm Master (bow thrusters, via its GW-1 gateway) and Mercury's outboard and sterndrive joysticks (proportional bow thrusters). It lists no Honda or Suzuki system. Yamaha's February 2026 update adds Sleipner S-link V2, and one other thruster brand, to its variable-speed thruster integration, which Yamaha says is only available through boat-builder installation on new boats
The tick is for Honda and Suzuki, which Sleipner's chart doesn't list; a system missing from that chart is not a statement of incompatibility, and Sleipner itself recommends checking with the joystick maker. BOW PRO integrates with Yamaha Helm Master EX, and VETUS says it needs Yamaha's upgraded Helm Master EX controls. Yamaha says its integrated variable-speed bow thruster control is only available through boat-builder installation on new boats (Yamaha rigging bulletin, January 2024, repeated in Yamaha's February 2026 update). If your boat already has Helm Master EX, we can't promise that a BOW PRO fitted now will work through the Yamaha joystick. It would run from its own VETUS panel or joystick, and we check with Yamaha before you commit. BOW PRO integrates with Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO) on Mercury Verado outboards. VETUS says this covers all BOW PRO models on single or multi-engine Verado boats, using a bow thruster integration kit from Mercury, and VETUS's Mercury flyer adds that Mercury's next-generation Digital Throttle & Shift controls are required. Mercury's current joystick pages name no thruster brands, so we confirm your engines and controls with a Mercury dealer before you commit.
Inboard and pod joystick integration
VETUS
Yanmar JC20A and JC30 inboard joysticks (twin shaft-drive installations), linked over J1939 through a VETUS CANverter, and, on vetus.com, Cummins inboards with the Glendinning joystick. CANverter gateways link BOW PRO's V-CAN bus to NMEA 2000 and J1939 controls
Side-Power
A much longer list over S-Link, which Sleipner builds on NMEA 2000: Volvo Penta (via its THCM gateway), ZF JMS, Twin Disc EJS, Cummins DockCommand, Yanmar JC30, Xenta, MAN (Emerson Marex 3D), Glendinning, Yacht Controller, Dockmate and others
BOW PRO integrates with Yanmar inboard joystick control on twin shaft-drive installations. VETUS names the Yanmar JC20A and the newer JC30, which Yanmar describes as joystick systems for twin Yanmar shaft-drive engines, and VETUS's wiring manual makes the link through a VETUS CANverter (J1939). VETUS's catalogue and Yanmar's Australian distributor also mention single-engine installations, so we confirm your engines and joystick before you commit. Both makers' lists depend on the engine and joystick makers: Sleipner's own chart (August 2026) notes that it is based on third-party information and may be outdated, and VETUS says some of its integrations need extra parts from the engine or control system maker.
Warranty
VETUS
3 years for a private owner's strictly recreational use (not a company), thrusters included. 12 months for professional use, with written approval from VETUS or its dealer beforehand. Wear parts such as brushes and anodes excluded; no registration step
Side-Power
2 years for leisure use; 1 year for commercial and other non-leisure use, from delivery or purchase by the end user. Transferable; wear and service parts excluded; faulty installation excluded; not following the maintenance in the product manual voids cover on the parts it affects; warranty service only by Sleipner or an authorised service representative; no registration requirement stated
VETUS's claims go through the supplier you bought from. VETUS voids a claim where required maintenance wasn't done by an authorised VETUS dealer or the installation was faulty, and excludes consequential costs such as transport, labour and lifting. The remaining warranty transfers to a new owner. Neither side gets the tick here. VETUS's term is a year longer for a private owner in strictly recreational use, but Sleipner's statement sets its terms by leisure or commercial use with no private-owner condition, so for a company-owned boat in leisure use Sleipner gives 2 years and VETUS's 3-year term doesn't apply. For commercial use, Sleipner gives 1 year and its statement asks for no approval beforehand, where VETUS gives 12 months with written approval first. Sleipner's one warranty statement covers all its equipment, so its terms are the same across every Sleipner series.

| Outboard joystick integration | BOW PRO integrates with Yamaha Helm Master EX (Yamaha's upgraded controls; Yamaha says new boats only, fitted by the boat builder); Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO) on Verado, with Mercury's integration kit; Honda outboards with Ultraflex controls; and Suzuki DF300BMD and DF350AMD with integrated steering | Sleipner's chart lists Yamaha Helm Master (bow thrusters, via its GW-1 gateway) and Mercury's outboard and sterndrive joysticks (proportional bow thrusters). It lists no Honda or Suzuki system. Yamaha's February 2026 update adds Sleipner S-link V2, and one other thruster brand, to its variable-speed thruster integration, which Yamaha says is only available through boat-builder installation on new boats |
| Inboard and pod joystick integration | Yanmar JC20A and JC30 inboard joysticks (twin shaft-drive installations), linked over J1939 through a VETUS CANverter, and, on vetus.com, Cummins inboards with the Glendinning joystick. CANverter gateways link BOW PRO's V-CAN bus to NMEA 2000 and J1939 controls | A much longer list over S-Link, which Sleipner builds on NMEA 2000: Volvo Penta (via its THCM gateway), ZF JMS, Twin Disc EJS, Cummins DockCommand, Yanmar JC30, Xenta, MAN (Emerson Marex 3D), Glendinning, Yacht Controller, Dockmate and others |
| Warranty | 3 years for a private owner's strictly recreational use (not a company), thrusters included. 12 months for professional use, with written approval from VETUS or its dealer beforehand. Wear parts such as brushes and anodes excluded; no registration step | 2 years for leisure use; 1 year for commercial and other non-leisure use, from delivery or purchase by the end user. Transferable; wear and service parts excluded; faulty installation excluded; not following the maintenance in the product manual voids cover on the parts it affects; warranty service only by Sleipner or an authorised service representative; no registration requirement stated |
| Support in Victoria | Luxfords Marine is the authorised Victorian VETUS distributor, based in Mornington. VETUS-Maxwell Pty Ltd in Capalaba, QLD is VETUS's Australian head office and distribution centre. | AMI Sales is Sleipner's Australian distributor, with a Victorian office in Keysborough. Sleipner's dealer locator and AMI both list six authorised Victorian dealers, tagged for installation and mobile service |
Sleipner figures come from its own August 2025 catalogue, August 2026 DC range sheet, September 2026 commercial catalogue, product pages, manuals, EU Declaration of Conformity, FAQ, warranty statement, joystick chart and dealer locator, with Australian distribution details from AMI Sales. VETUS figures come from its 2026-2027 catalogue, manuals, product pages, warranty policy and Australian support pages. Engine-joystick details also come from Yamaha, Mercury and Yanmar, and from Power Equipment, Yanmar's Australian distributor, each labelled where used. All were checked in September 2026. Where a maker publishes no figure, the table says so rather than estimating. Whatever a manufacturer's warranty says, Australian Consumer Law guarantees also apply and can't be excluded - and for goods under $100,000 they cover business buyers too.
Replacing a Side-Power thruster
- First check whether your Sleipner is ignition protected: Sleipner fits ignition protection as standard on its eVision E and ER thrusters, and sells SE-IP and SEP-IP versions. VETUS says a thruster in a compartment with a petrol engine, tank or fuel line, or propane storage must be ignition protected, and lists outboard engines and their fuel tanks, and PWCs, among the spaces its ignition-protected thrusters are made for. BOW PRO is not ignition protected, so in those spaces the replacement is one of VETUS's on/off ignition-protected DC thrusters (25 to 160 kgf, 12 or 24 V), and we match it to the compartment before we quote.
- Then look at the tunnel. In Sleipner's range sheet the number after the slash in a model code is the tunnel diameter (an SE100/185T uses a 185 mm tunnel). Its 110, 125, 140, 185, 250 and 300 mm tunnels are VETUS sizes too. The 215 mm tunnel of the SE120, SE150, E120 and E150, and the 386 mm tunnel of the E420 and Sleipner's larger range, are not, so those installations need a closer look.
- vetus.com says BOW PRO fits existing tunnels with minimal modifications, and VETUS says it was made to share tunnel sizes with many other brands. VETUS doesn't name those brands, so we check every Sleipner replacement rather than promise a drop-in fit.
- Measure the tunnel's internal diameter, wall thickness and length, and the clear space inside the hull above the tunnel, then photograph the existing unit and its label. Those details decide the model and whether any tunnel work is needed.
- Tell us the battery bank voltage, battery type and cable run. VETUS publishes a battery capacity for each BOW PRO model, and as standard the BOWB boost charger is only suitable for lead-acid batteries, so a lithium thruster bank needs checking first.
- If your Sleipner runs 24 V on a 12 V boat through a voltage conversion switch box and an additional battery, a BOW PRO Boosted can do the same job without the switch box, up to 150 kgf: it runs from its own 24 V bank (two batteries on BOWB057 to BOWB150) and charges it from the 12 V system through its built-in charger. Sleipner's 12 V to 24 V switch boxes serve the SE120 to SE250 (139 to 300 kg in its 12/24 V column), and larger BOW PRO Boosted models charge a 48 V bank from 24 V, so we check the thrust you need as well as the bank, and we'll size that bank with you.
- Check any joystick link before you switch. If your Sleipner runs from a Volvo Penta, ZF, Twin Disc, MAN, Xenta, Yacht Controller or Dockmate joystick or remote, VETUS publishes no BOW PRO integration with that system, so a BOW PRO would run from its own VETUS panel or joystick instead. VETUS publishes integrations with Yamaha Helm Master EX (Yamaha's upgraded controls; Yamaha says new boats only, fitted by the boat builder); Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO) on Verado, with Mercury's integration kit; Honda outboards with Ultraflex controls; Suzuki DF300BMD and DF350AMD; Yanmar JC20A and JC30 inboard joysticks (twin shaft-drive installations); and, on vetus.com, Cummins inboards with the Glendinning joystick. If your boat already has Helm Master EX, we can't promise that a BOW PRO fitted now will work through the Yamaha joystick. It would run from its own VETUS panel or joystick, and we check with Yamaha before you commit. For every other system we confirm your engines and controls before we quote.
- Plan on new controls: BOW PRO runs on VETUS's proprietary V-CAN bus, so it takes a VETUS panel and loom, or a CANverter link to a supported joystick. Send us the Sleipner model code, tunnel size and photos, and we'll confirm the fit and the complete kit before we quote.

When VETUS is the right call
- Your boat runs a 12 V system and you want a brushless proportional thruster with full published specifications, up to 76 kgf. The 12 V BOW PRO BOWA models are brushless and fully proportional, from 30 kgf in a 110 mm tunnel to 76 kgf in 185 mm. Sleipner's 12 V proportional tunnel thruster with full published specifications is the brushed SEP PRO; its brushless 12 V E30 to E95 were listed as new in its August 2026 range sheet.
- You lean on the thruster for long stretches on a 12 V boat - holding the bow off a pier in a Port Phillip northerly, or berthing across the tide in Western Port. The 12 V BOW PRO BOWA is rated for 6 or 10 minutes at full power by model, against about 3 minutes maximum continuous for Sleipner's brushed SEP PRO, its 12 V proportional tunnel thruster with full published specifications. On 24 and 48 V boats, Sleipner's eVision is rated continuous at full power, so there it has the edge, and Sleipner's preliminary eVision manual gives the same rating to its newly listed 12 V E30 to E95.
- You want a 24 V thruster of up to 150 kgf on a 12 V boat without a separate conversion switch box. BOW PRO Boosted runs from its own 24 V thruster bank (two batteries on BOWB057 to BOWB150) and keeps it charged from your 12 V system through a built-in, monitored charger that VETUS says won't drain the start battery. As standard, that charger is only suitable for lead-acid batteries.
- You run Honda outboards on Ultraflex controls, or Suzuki DF300BMD or DF350AMD outboards with integrated steering, and want the thruster on the joystick. VETUS publishes BOW PRO integration for both, and Sleipner's joystick chart lists neither. Other systems from these engine makers may not be covered, so we confirm your engines and controls before we quote.
- You own the boat privately and use it only for recreation. VETUS gives a private owner 3 years on thrusters for strictly recreational use, against 2 years for leisure use in Sleipner's warranty statement. The 3 years doesn't cover a company-owned boat, and VETUS voids a claim where required maintenance wasn't done by an authorised VETUS dealer, so plan the thruster's servicing with one.
- Your boat has a 48 V system and you want a rim-drive thruster. RIMDRIVE RD160 (160 kgf, 250 mm tunnel) uses a gearless rim motor, and VETUS markets it as the world's quietest thruster; Sleipner publishes no rim-drive thruster.
When Side-Power is the right call
- You need continuous full-power running from a DC thruster. Sleipner rates its eVision range for continuous 100% thrust at 22°C ambient, typically limited by battery capacity (24/48 V from the E100 up, and, in its preliminary manual, the newly listed 12 V E30 to E95 too), where BOW PRO is rated for 6 or 10 minutes at full power.
- The thruster has to share a space with petrol engines, tanks or fuel lines and you want proportional control. Sleipner's eVision E and ER thrusters have ignition protection and proportional control as standard, and SEP-IP models add ignition protection to the brushed SEP PRO. BOW PRO is not ignition protected, and VETUS's ignition-protected thrusters are on/off DC units.
- You want a retractable thruster now. Sleipner's ER eVision and SR retracts are available today, while VETUS's retractable BOW PRO is still coming soon and VETUS's 2026-2027 catalogue lists no other retractable.
- You want a purpose-built external stern thruster. Sleipner's SX and eVision SXE100 mount on the transom as complete units, and Sleipner says the SXE100 and its EX pods need no tunnel. VETUS's external stern option is a transom-mounted tunnel for one of its tunnel thrusters.
- Your boat needs hydraulic or AC thrust beyond VETUS's 550 kgf hydraulic top end, or a Volvo Penta, ZF or Twin Disc joystick. Sleipner's SH and SAC thrusters run to 2200 kg, and its joystick chart lists all three systems.
- Your boat is company-owned or works commercially. Sleipner's warranty statement gives 2 years for leisure use and 1 year for commercial use, set by how the boat is used with no private-owner condition, and asks for no approval beforehand. VETUS's 3 years is for a private owner's strictly recreational use, and its 12 months for professional use needs written approval from VETUS or its dealer first.
- You already have a Sleipner (Side-Power) installation you're happy with. Sleipner offers an eVision motor upgrade for earlier Sleipner thrusters, directly or with an adapter plate, with flange kits for SE and SEP 80/100 (185 mm) and 130/150/170 (250 mm) gearlegs, and AMI Sales, Sleipner's Australian distributor, has a Victorian office in Keysborough with six authorised Victorian dealers listed.
VETUS vs Side-Power: common questions
Is Side-Power the same as Sleipner?
Yes - same maker, same thrusters. Until 2021 Sleipner used two brand names, Sleipner in some markets and Side-Power in others, and since then it has used Sleipner only. So a Side-Power bow thruster and a Sleipner bow thruster come from the same range, and this page compares them as one.
Should I choose VETUS or Side-Power (Sleipner)?
It depends on the boat. On a 12 V boat needing up to 76 kgf, VETUS has the published edge over Sleipner's brushed SEP PRO: the 12 V BOW PRO BOWA gives brushless proportional control from 30 to 76 kgf, rated 6 or 10 minutes at full power against about 3 minutes for the SEP PRO. Sleipner's brushless 12 V E30 to E95 are newly listed without full published specifications, and its preliminary eVision manual rates the E-series continuous at full power. For a privately owned boat in strictly recreational use, VETUS gives 3 years' warranty against Sleipner's 2 years for leisure use (VETUS's 3 years doesn't cover a company-owned boat, and VETUS voids a claim where required maintenance wasn't done by an authorised VETUS dealer), and VETUS publishes BOW PRO integration with Honda (Ultraflex) and Suzuki DF300BMD and DF350AMD outboard joysticks, which Sleipner's chart doesn't list. Sleipner has the edge for continuous full-power running on its eVision range (rated at 22°C ambient, typically limited by battery capacity), ignition protection on a proportional thruster, retractables from a current catalogue range (VETUS's retractable BOW PRO is coming soon, and its 2026-2027 catalogue lists no other retractable), purpose-built external stern thrusters, hydraulic or AC thrust to 2200 kg, a longer inboard and pod joystick list, and warranty terms that don't depend on a private owner.
VETUS or Side-Power (Sleipner) for a 12 V boat?
On a plain 12 V system, VETUS's 12 V BOW PRO BOWA models are brushless and proportional from 30 kgf (110 mm tunnel) to 76 kgf (185 mm), rated for 6 or 10 minutes at full power by model. Sleipner's 12 V proportional tunnel thruster with full published specifications is the brushed SEP PRO, which goes up to 160 kg at 12 V and is rated about 3 minutes maximum continuous. Its brushless 12 V E30 to E95 are listed as new in its August 2026 range sheet, and its preliminary eVision user manual rates the E-series for continuous running at 22°C ambient, typically limited by battery capacity. Need more than 76 kgf? BOW PRO Boosted (57 to 150 kgf on a 12 V boat) runs its own 24 V bank of two batteries, charged from your 12 V system through a built-in charger that, as standard, is only suitable for lead-acid batteries; Sleipner's route is a 24 V SE thruster with a voltage conversion switch box and an additional 12 V battery.
Can I replace a Side-Power bow thruster with a VETUS BOW PRO?
It depends on the tunnel, and we confirm it rather than promise it. In Sleipner's August 2026 range sheet, its SE and eVision tunnels are 110, 125, 140, 185, 215, 250 and 300 mm; all but 215 mm are VETUS sizes too, and VETUS says BOW PRO was made to share tunnel sizes with many other brands. A 215 mm tunnel, or a 386 mm tunnel from Sleipner's larger range, is not a VETUS size and needs a closer look. If your Sleipner is an eVision or an SE-IP or SEP-IP model, tell us: VETUS says a thruster in a compartment with a petrol engine, tank or fuel line, or propane storage must be ignition protected, and BOW PRO is not, so in those spaces we'd quote one of VETUS's on/off ignition-protected DC thrusters instead. BOW PRO also runs on VETUS's own V-CAN bus, so plan on a VETUS panel and loom, or a CANverter link to a supported joystick, in place of your Sleipner controls. Send us the tunnel's internal diameter, wall thickness and length, the space inside the hull, your battery voltage and photos of the existing unit, and we'll confirm the fit and the complete kit before quoting.
Which has the longer warranty, VETUS or Sleipner, and who handles it in Victoria?
It depends on who owns the boat and how it's used. For a privately owned boat used strictly for recreation, VETUS: 3 years on thrusters, against 2 years for leisure use in Sleipner's warranty statement. VETUS's 3-year term doesn't cover a company-owned boat, while Sleipner's statement sets its terms by leisure or commercial use with no private-owner condition, so on that statement a company-owned leisure boat gets 2 years. For commercial use, Sleipner gives 1 year, and VETUS 12 months with written approval from VETUS or its dealer beforehand. Both exclude wear parts and both transfer to a new owner. VETUS voids a claim where required maintenance wasn't done by an authorised VETUS dealer; Sleipner voids cover on the parts affected where the maintenance in its product manual wasn't followed. VETUS warranty claims go through whoever supplied the thruster; for a BOW PRO we supply, that's us in Mornington. Sleipner warranty work must be done by Sleipner or an authorised service representative, and AMI Sales has a Victorian office in Keysborough with six authorised Victorian dealers listed. Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply on top of either maker's warranty.
Does VETUS make a stern thruster like the Side-Power SX?
VETUS lists no purpose-built external stern unit like the SX. Its tunnel thrusters, BOW PRO included, are sold as bow and stern thrusters, and VETUS offers transom-mounted external stern tunnels (STERN110P to STERN300P) for stern installations. Sleipner's SX and eVision SXE100 are purpose-built external stern units, and Sleipner says the SXE100 needs no tunnel and suits twin-sterndrive boats up to 55 ft (about 17 m) - a genuine Sleipner advantage on those boats. If your boat already has a stern tunnel, we can check whether a BOW PRO fits it.
