Hydrive POWERKIT-M12 vs SeaStar Power Assist

Adding power steering to hydraulic outboard systems

Like-for-like here is SeaStar's Power Assist - an inline 12/24 V electro-hydraulic pump that boosts a manual hydraulic system, exactly the category POWERKIT-M12 lives in. (SeaStar's Optimus EPS is a different animal: a dealer-installed steer-by-wire system that replaces the hydraulic helm entirely.) Both assist units keep the wheel hydraulically connected, so you keep steering if power fails.

Side by side

Published manufacturer figures only. Where a maker doesn't publish a number, the table says so.

What it is

Hydrive POWERKIT-M12

12 V DC microprocessor-controlled electro-hydraulic assist

SeaStar Power Assist PA1200-2

12/24 V electronically controlled inline assist pump

Works with

Hydrive POWERKIT-M12

Any brand or horsepower of outboard - pairs with 211BH-XT or HD cylinders, and bracket-mount inboard cylinders

SeaStar Power Assist PA1200-2

SeaStar helms and cylinders only (PRO version for PRO helms); power-steering cylinders excluded

If power fails

Hydrive POWERKIT-M12

Reverts to manual hydraulic steering

SeaStar Power Assist PA1200-2

Either way the wheel stays connected - losing assist simply means more effort, as Dometic's manual spells out for the PA1200.

SeaStar Power Assist PA1200-2

2 years, limited to 1 year for commercial, rental or income-producing use (Dometic warranty, Form 340124 Rev B)

Whatever the manufacturer's warranty says, both brands also carry Australian Consumer Law guarantees that can't be excluded - and for goods under $100,000 those apply to business buyers too.

Where POWERKIT-M12 wins

  • Brand-agnostic: Hydrive rates POWERKIT-M12 for any brand or horsepower of outboard. SeaStar's Power Assist is published for SeaStar components only, and its warranty wording discourages mixing brands.
  • Hydrive rates POWERKIT-M12 for commercial use; SeaStar's manual scopes its assist unit to recreational marine applications.
  • Pairs upward into HD cylinders and bracket-mount inboard cylinders - one assist unit across the range.

Credit where due

  • Well-documented electrical and hydraulic specs - 240 cu in/min pump flow, published draw figures, 12/24 V auto-detection.
  • For a fully electronic helm with speed-adaptive effort and joystick docking, SeaStar's Optimus EPS ecosystem is the deepest offering in the market - dealer-installed, with its own fluid and no manual wheel backup.

Our verdict

On a SeaStar-equipped boat, SeaStar's Power Assist is the natural add-on. Everywhere else - mixed systems, big multi-rigs, commercial boats - POWERKIT-M12's any-brand fitment and commercial rating make it the more flexible way to get fingertip steering, and it's the unit we fit behind Hydrive kits like OBKIT1-XT.

Questions we get asked

Is this the same thing as Optimus EPS?

No. Both assist units here bolt into an existing manual hydraulic system and leave the wheel hydraulically connected. Optimus EPS replaces the helm with electronics - steer-by-wire with electric pumps - must be installed by an authorised dealer, and has no manual wheel-to-cylinder backup path. Different category, and quite different failure behaviour.

Will power steering help my twin 300 hp rig?

That's exactly the use case - Hydrive pairs POWERKIT-M12 with the 211BH-XT cylinder on big multi-rig transoms so a 1,200 hp spread steers with fingertip effort. Talk to us about matching it to your setup.
