Hydrive HD Series vs SeaStar & Capilano
Heavy-duty steering for vessels roughly 10 m to 50 m
This is where the ranges stop overlapping. SeaStar's heavy manual line is Capilano: variable-displacement helms and brass cylinders published to 300 KgM and 60 ft. Above that, their catalogue moves you to engine-driven or 24 V power steering, and past 70 ft to a factory review. Hydrive's HD Series is a published manual range to 2,651 KgM - roughly nine times the Capilano ceiling - with full-feedback helms sized from the same tables our HD selector uses.

Whatever the manufacturer's warranty says, both brands also carry Australian Consumer Law guarantees that can't be excluded - and for goods under $100,000 those apply to business buyers too.
Where HD Series wins
- A published manual range to 2,651 KgM. SeaStar's biggest complete manual system is 300 KgM on twin Capilano cylinders - above that their catalogue moves you to power steering, or to a factory review for anything over 70 ft.
- Full-feedback helms - on a sailing vessel the helmsman keeps rudder feel, something no-feedback systems remove by design.
- Sized in the open: Hydrive publishes the torque and turns tables, and our HD selector runs them for you online.
- Designed and built in Adelaide, where Hydrive says every unit is individually tested - and the factory is a phone call away for survey documentation on a specific vessel.
Credit where due
- Capilano's variable-displacement helms are a clever solution - the helmsman can trade effort against turns underway.
- The power-steering range publishes real engineering figures to about 762 KgM, with automatic manual backup.
Our verdict
Below 300 KgM both brands have credible heavy systems, and SeaStar's power-steering range publishes real figures well beyond that. The difference is what you can still do manually: Hydrive publishes complete manual systems to 2,651 KgM, which is why HD is our default spec for commercial vessels, big sail and anything in survey. Run the HD selector or send us the rudder torque figures.
Questions we get asked
What does 'full feedback' mean and why would I want it?
A full-feedback helm transmits rudder loads back to the wheel, so the helmsman feels weather helm and pressure changes - most valued on sailing vessels. Standard no-feedback hydraulic helms (both brands offer them) isolate the wheel completely. Hydrive's HD range gives you the choice.
Can you supply survey paperwork for an HD system?
Hydrive states HD safety margins exceed Marine Survey Society requirements and each unit is individually tested. For a vessel in survey we go one step further and confirm the sizing and documentation with Hydrive's Adelaide factory against your surveyor's requirements before anything ships.
