Hydrive COMKIT-IB1 vs BayStar Inboard
Inboard rudder steering for leisure boats to about 8 m
A rare exact spec match: both kits are rated at 30 KgM of rudder torque for smaller inboard leisure boats, and both arrive as genuine complete kits. The choice comes down to wheel feel, the range above each kit, and where support lives.

Where COMKIT-IB1 wins
- Three turns lock-to-lock - direct, published, and quick enough for river and bar work. BayStar publishes no turns figure for its inboard kit.
- A real ladder above it: COMKIT-IB2, the 85 KgM IBKIT1, and the HD Series beyond - all from the same Adelaide factory. BayStar's boxed inboard range stops at 52 kg-m.
- A PRO variant adds Hydrive's commercial rating for hire boats and workboats.
Credit where due
- A compact tiller-arm cylinder and cut-to-length tubing make it an easy fit in tight lazarettes.
- The only complete boxed inboard kit in the SeaStar catalogue - everything else inboard is components.
Our verdict
Identical torque ratings, but COMKIT-IB1 publishes its turns, sells beside a full ladder of bigger Hydrive inboard systems, and is stocked and supported here. For a small displacement launch it's the easier kit to buy, fit and grow out of.
Questions we get asked
How do I know 30 KgM is enough for my rudder?
Rudder torque depends on blade area, balance and speed. As a guide Hydrive rates COMKIT-IB1 for most leisure boats to about 8 m; give us the boat's length, speed and rudder details and we'll size it properly - and if it's marginal we'll quote COMKIT-IB2 or IBKIT1 alongside so you can see both.
