Vetus vs Yanmar marine diesels
Considering a Yanmarengine for your boat? Here's how the Vetus range compares, model for model — on weight, drive options, standard equipment, servicing and local support. Every comparison is built from published manufacturer specs.
Where Yanmar is strong
- Own-design engines with a strong reputation
- Cheaper consumables/parts, widely available
- Strong Australian distributor support
Where Vetus can have the edge
- GM and YM series run to 3,600 rpm — higher rated speed than the lower-revving Vetus M4 engines, which can mean more noise at cruise.
- JH-CR models use electronic Bosch common-rail — refined, but adds an engine ECU and diagnostic-tool dependence versus a fully mechanical diesel.
- 1GM10 is shaft-drive only — no factory saildrive option.
